'Sarah strikes a chord with top music judges' - Thanet Times article
A guitar playing mum from Ramsgate hopes to hit the big time after reaching the semi-finals of a national music competition.
Sarah Lucy Dole, 36, was picked from hundreds who swamped Brighton's Thistle Hotel on February 10 to compete for a place in Live and Unsigned 2008.
The competition aims to find the country's hidden talent and the winner will scoop a £20,000 recording contract with music company Future Music.
Country artist Sarah, who is studying for a music degree at Christ Church University's Broadstairs Campus, said: "There were six judges from the music industry watching, so it was quite nerve-racking.
"There was a long queue and they were taking in six at a time. They came out and said they wanted people who were singer-songwriters, so on the spur of the moment, I took a guitar off a friend of mine and went in and sung with the guitar which I hadn't planned.
"I missed a note but I just laughed and I think they liked it."
Sarah is one of the only 15 asked to go back to Brighton in March and if she wins, she will represent the south east in the final to be shown on ITV.
Music runs in the family for mum-of-four Sarah, who said: "I've been singing since I was three, I always liked the country music that my dad George played.
"My kids are all musical too. My daughters Chloe, Emily and Maddie all sing, and little three-year-old Thomas can play drums, even in a band. We often have a sing and a jam together."
Originally from Maidstone, where she once joined Glenn Tillbrook for a gig in Maidstone Prison, Sarah says her writing has flourished since moving to Thanet.
She said: "I love being by the sea, the sea air has inspired me and I've written a lot of songs here."
With everything from rock 'n' roll to bluegrass in her repertoire, she will have difficulty deciding what will impress the judges the most at the competition's semi-final, held in Hove on March 30th. Testimonials
Joe Bligh:
Sarah's voice is amazing. You can tell that the lyrics she writes come from the heart. I love the way that Sarah can successfully sing harmonies over her own melody line in her recordings - something that requires an almost perfect pitch to be able to do... it's like double the pleasure of listening to her voice!
